Pakistani scientist Dr Nousheen Zaidi wins Georg Forster Medal

Pakistani scientist Dr. Nousheen Zaidi has become the first from the country to receive the prestigious Georg Forster Research Award. The recognition highlights her contributions to public health research and scientific innovation. It also marks a significant achievement for Pakistan’s academic community.
Dr. Zaidi serves as a professor at the Public Health, Environment and Applied Research Lab at the University of the Punjab. She completed her PhD in biochemistry from University of Tübingen. She has also worked at leading institutions, including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Janssen Pharmaceutica.
In addition to her academic work, she leads the Action Research Collective, focusing on community-based health solutions. Her initiatives include a nationwide water quality mapping project and Roshan Clinics addressing child stunting. These efforts reflect her commitment to linking research with real-world impact.
The award is presented annually by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to distinguished scholars from developing countries. Named after Georg Forster, it includes research funding of 60,000 euros. The prize is supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
A reception was held in Lahore to honour her achievement, hosted by officials from the German Embassy. The event brought together academics and researchers to celebrate her contributions. Her recognition is expected to strengthen scientific collaboration between Pakistan and international partners.
